Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Nebraska (BCBSNE) is encouraging Nebraskans to “Get Moving and Get Cool Stuff” this summer.
BCBSNE is partnering with the EveryMove activity tracking platform to reward Nebraskans who live a more active life and track their activity.
The 3-month campaign comes on the heels of a recent health assessment that showed the majority of 32,000 Nebraskans aren’t exercising enough, don’t eat the right foods and have a high Body Mass Index that can lead to serious health issues.
“It’s clear there is work to be done in helping people attain healthier lives,” said Dr. Joann Schaefer, BCBSNE’s chief medical officer. “We want to help facilitate that, and we hope the ‘Get Moving’ campaign is a jump-starter.”
The campaign, which runs from July 1 through September 30 is open to all Nebraskans of any age or physical ability.
Participants don’t have to be Blue Cross members to track their activity and receive rewards.
To get started, participants can go to move4rewards.com and establish a “Get Moving” account. When participants reach activity milestones, they will get “cool stuff’ in the form of incentives from companies that include Nebraska Furniture Mark, Cabela’s, Omaha Steaks, and Anytime Fitness.
Scottsbluff YMCA Senior Director, Aaron Fabel, says it’s easy to stay active.
“Some simple things to do would be you know parking your car a little bit further when you go grocery shopping or taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Things like that to stay active go a long ways.”
There are several ways to track activity-with a smartphone application, devices such as FitBit, FuelBand, Jawbone, Garmin Connect, or logging activity manually on the everymove.com website.
It doesn’t require being a serious runner or athlete to get rewards-even walking the dog, mowing the yard or cleaning the house qualify as activity.
