St. Louis still has nine companies among the 500 largest in the nation.
The Fortune 500 list is out this morning, and it contains the same St. Louis companies as last year. The largest among them, Express Scripts Holding, climbed to 20th place from 24th last year.
That’s the highest ranking for a St. Louis company in more than two decades. McDonnell Douglas ranked as high as 21st in 1992, when the Fortune list included only industrial companies.
Here is the 2014 Fortune 500 roster of St. Louis companies, with last year’s ranking in parentheses:
- 20. Express Scripts Holding (24)
- 121. Emerson (123)
- 197. Monsanto (206)
- 251. Centene (303)
- 274. Reinsurance Group of America (275)
- 365. Peabody Energy (315)
- 379. Ameren (373)
- 444. Jones Financial (491)
- 449. Graybar Electric (465)
Energizer Holdings ranked 549th, but it’s in the process ofsplitting itself into two companies, so it’s probably not a contender to move into the top 500.
Wal-Mart Stores kept the No. 1 position on this year’s Fortune 500, followed by Exxon Mobil, Chevron and Berkshire Hathaway.
