Presbyterian Health Plan and New Mexico’s startup health plan, New Mexico Health Connections, have enrolled nearly 20,000 individuals in insurance plans on and off the federal insurance exchange, the companies said.
Presbyterian has enrolled 9,852 people, 6,459 of whom were enrolled through the federal insurance exchange, healthcare.gov, and 3,393 who bought off-exchange plans, said Neal Spero, Presbyterian’s vice president of sales and marketing.
NMHC, a nonprofit cooperative health plan that was formed as part of the Affordable Care Act, has enrolled “well over 9,000 members and is on track to reach a membership of more than 10,000,” the company said in a prepared statement. “Enrollment through the Exchange is significantly driving that number. The data literally changes hour-to-hour as more applications are completed. These positive numbers show that a nonprofit co-op health plan has a role in driving competition in the New Mexico health insurance marketplace.”
The two other New Mexico insurers that are selling on the exchange — Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico and Molina Healthcare of New Mexico — declined to divulge their enrollment numbers.
As of March 15, 18,600 New Mexicans had enrolled in individual plans through the federal exchange, said New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange Chairman Dr. J.R. Damron. The exchange is expecting updated enrollment figures from the federal government in mid-April, he added.
In a prepared statement, NMHIX said there could be as many as 10,500 people who still have not completed the application process. Many of those people could be eligible for an extension to enroll in a health plan, NMHIX said.
