CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield has made a $20 million investment in Healthways, an expansion of an existing partnership between the two companies.
Nashville-based Healthways provides care coordinators for CareFirst’s patient-centered medical home program. CareFirst and Healthways in October 2012 announced a three-year extension of the partnership that takes the deal through June 2016.
Healthways (NASDAQ: HWAY) also makes disease management services available to CareFirst members.
In a statement, CareFirst CEO Chet Burrell said the investment “helps secure long-term services for our customers and will enhance the opportunities for growth and innovation in our PCMH program and elsewhere.”
Baltimore-based CareFirst is the region’s largest insurance provider.
