BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama and Alfa Insurance are expanding their partnership in offering health and dental insurance.
The two companies announced Tuesday that Blue Cross health and dental policies that are available both on and off the new federally facilitated health insurance marketplace will now be available from Alfa offices throughout the state. Blue Cross is the only company offering individual coverage through the federally facilitated marketplace in 64 of Alabama’s 67 counties.
Alfa is a major provider of auto, home and life insurance. Alfa President Jimmy Parnell said agents can help policyholders navigate the new federal health care law.
The federal law requires individual coverage by Jan. 1, and it provides subsidies for those making less than 400 percent of the federal poverty level.
