UnitedHealth Group , the nation’s leading health benefits and services company, announced today it is creating nearly 1,500 new jobs in Texas, expanding its already significant presence in the state.
The number includes 250 new jobs at UnitedHealthcare’s operations center in San Antonio to serve its growing number of plan participants in the Lone Star state. The additional 250 jobs in San Antonio follows nearly 260 new hires in 2011, bringing the total number of employees at this facility to more than 1,000 by the end of this year. UnitedHealthcare is the industry-leading health benefits business of UnitedHealth Group.
The job openings in San Antonio are part of approximately 1,500 new jobs UnitedHealth Group businesses are offering in the state, announced by Texas Governor Rick Perry and UnitedHealth Group CEO Stephen J. Hemsley in conjunction with a news conference held today in Irving. The total includes another 115 jobs in Harlingen being created by UnitedHealthcare and approximately 1,100 job openings in UnitedHealth Group’s Optum health services businesses — 800 jobs at Optum’s new Connextions facility in Irving and 330 jobs at OptumRx’s new pharmacy benefit management facility in Sugar Land.
Currently, UnitedHealth Group employs nearly 11,000 Texans and serves more than 3.3 million people in the state with a health care network of nearly 500 hospitals and more than 36,800 physicians and other care professionals statewide.
“This is an employer that knows Texas and knows Texans,” Gov. Perry said. “They’ve witnessed first-hand what we have to offer, and as a result, they’re continuing to invest their future in the Lone Star State. This vote of confidence affirms our efforts to create a jobs-friendly climate that will attract and keep employers like UnitedHealth Group here in Texas.”
“UnitedHealthcare has been a strong supporter and business partner with the city of San Antonio for many years,” said Julian Castro, mayor of San Antonio. “Their expansion will promote economic growth while helping to better serve residents’ health care service needs.”
