Amazon is all set to invest around $2.8 billion in Telangana, India to develop a new AWS cloud region. K.T. Rama Rao, the Minister for Information and Technology, Electronics & Communications, Municipal Administration, Urban Development and, Industries & Commerce Departments, Government of Telangana, stated that Amazon’s investment will enable the set up of an AWS region in Hyderabad by mid-2022.

It will be Amazon’s second infrastructure region in India, said the e-commerce giant in its press release. The new cloud region will assist developers, enterprises, start-ups, non-profit organizations as well as the government to deploy applications and serve customers with local data centers. Although the details of the investment are not yet revealed.

With the development of more data centers in India, Amazon will be able to comply with the country’s data localization policy. It will help the company to attract more customers while leading the cloud market in India. It is the largest foreign direct investment bagged by Telangana, a state formed in 2014. AWS has had numerous high-profile clients in recent years. Some of these include Ashok Leyland, Axis Bank, Aditya Birla Capital, Bajaj Capital, Byju, Dream11, Edelweiss, HDFC Life, Mahindra Electric, Ola, Oyo, RBL Bank, Sharda University, Swiggy, and Tata Sky.
Peter DeSantis, Amazon’s senior vice president of global infrastructure and customer support, said that businesses in India are embracing cloud computing to lower costs and increase agility. It will enable rapid innovation that will help meet the need of billions of customers in India and abroad. He further added that the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region will help provide customers with more flexibility and choice. It will help in setting up architecture with greater fault tolerance, resilience across geographic locations.

Amazon, Microsoft, and Google have expanded the cloud services market in India. Microsoft finalized a deal with telecom leader Jio Platforms last year so that businesses can access Office 365 along with other Microsoft services at an affordable cost. Amazon allied with Airtel, the leading telecom operator in India. Airtel will sell AWS as part of its services to its customers. Presently, Microsoft has three data center regions in India, while Google has two regions.
