For years, doctors have been treating patients by spending time analyzing their symptoms and then detailing the observations in their medical records. The whole procedure requires time to manually enter the problems into a database and also hire costly human clerks.
However, Amazon may change all of this, by reducing this long process to a shorter one, with a new AI-powered voice transcription technology. Here’s how.
Matt Wood, the vice president of Artificial Intelligence at Amazon Web Services claimed that the upcoming AI tool from the company can understand medical language. Also, it can read an unorganized medical text and then pull information like dosages and symptoms from it. He quoted to CNBC,
“Our overarching goal is to free up the doctor, so they have more attention going to where it should be directed and that’s to the patient.”

Amazon’s AI tool dubbed as Amazon Transcribe Medical has been specifically designed for the healthcare field. It is time-saving and very convenient.
The tool needs deep learning to automatically transcribe the interaction between a doctor and patient. It mentions the useful information from the patient’s medical record, therefore saving both the time and resources of the doctor.
Free up Doctors for patient care
The AI-powered tool has been designed with the sole purpose of freeing up some of the doctor’s time.
According to a study from the American Medical Association and the University of Wisconsin, primary care physicians in the US spend around 6 to 8 hours/day filling up medical reports in electronic health record systems.
Now, Amazon’s tool can finally cut down this time.
The tool understands the medical language
Amazon’s transcription tool catches conversations and adds on medical records with a great level of accuracy. The tool understands the medical language and doesn’t even need the doctor to call out commas and periods.
The doctors just have to interrelate and the system takes care of everything.
The medical records read by the tool can easily provide an electronic health record system, that has now become a standard in the US.
The generated data can be utilized to form medical reports with useful information such as patient diagnosis, treatments, dosages, symptoms, and signs, and more.
A daunting challenge awaits Amazon
While the Transcribe Medical is now available in the select US regions, Amazon still faces daunting privacy concerns.
The tool is compliant with the US Government’s Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). However, the company would have to convince both doctors and patients to use it. It would have to be fully transparent about use, data collection, and accessibility.
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is not providing detailed guidance on how healthcare companies should secure digital patient medical records. The company will need to be specific about how the data will be used, and who has access to it.
