Tech giants, Accenture and Microsoft have built up a prototype that is based on blockchain technology. This is built with the aim of creating a digital identity for around 1.1 billion people across the world that don’t have a formal ID.
Accenture, Microsoft building blockchain ID prototype
According to Accenture, around one-sixth of the world’s population is not able to participate in cultural, political, social and economic life due to lack of ID.
Accenture executives said in a statement that establishing identity is a must in today’s world for gaining access to healthcare. Identity is also required to a host of other services benefits and activities, such including voting, education, banking, housing, mobile communications, and family and childcare benefits.
Prototype ID2020
The prototype model, called ‘ID2020’ is built on Accenture’s blockchain capabilities and its experience developing large-scale biometric systems. Further, it operates on Microsoft Azure’s cloud platform.

Accenture and Microsoft have demonstrated the prototype earlier this month. By employing a ‘technology-forward’ approach, the goal of ID2020 is to make digital identity a reality in order to leverage secure and well-established systems.
Access to personal information
The executives of both the companies said that the prototype is designed in such a way so as to provide individuals direct consent over who has access to their personal information. However, the prototype doesn’t store any personally identifiable information; rather it taps into existing ‘off-chain’ systems when the individual user grants access.
What David Treat said-
David Treat, a managing director in Accenture’s global blockchain business said, ‘People without a documented identity suffer by being excluded from modern society’. Treat added, ‘Our prototype is personal, private and portable, empowering individuals to access and share appropriate information when convenient and without the worry of using or losing paper documentation’.
What Yorke Rhodes said-
Yorke Rhodes, global business strategist at Microsoft said, ‘We believe that identity is one of the most important needs in international development and an area where Microsoft and the private sector are uniquely positioned to contribute’.
