After 25 years, Microsoft has decided that it is the end of the road for Internet Explorer.
The tech firm has announced that it will no longer be using the web browser in the future. In a blog post, Microsoft’s 365 product team confirmed that it will not support Internet Explorer 11, the latest version from 30th November 2020.
Also, from 17th August 2020, Microsoft’s 365 app and services will not work with the browser, and the sites that were designed specifically for the browser will have a degraded experience. For degraded experience, new Microsoft 365 features will not be available or a few features may stop working when accessing the app or service via Internet Explorer 11.
Developers testing on modern browsers instead of Internet Explorer
Chris Martin, the cybersecurity expert in Microsoft’s Windows division said that the time was running out for Internet Explorer. He said that they are not supporting new web standards. While some sites work fine but most developers aren’t testing only on Internet Explorer these days. They are testing on modern browsers. Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome browsers are dominating the market.

Mr. Jackson further stated that with new apps coming out with a greater frequency, they want to make sure that users do not miss out on a progressively larger portion of the web. This has made way for the tech giant’s new Edge app, which they will be rolling out soon.
End of support for Microsoft Edge Legacy
Microsoft has also announced that they will be ending the support for the Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop app from 9th March 2021.
Their blog post said that the new Microsoft Edge is the best expression of a modern browser. They have further clarified that apps and sites created for Microsoft Edge Legacy will continue to work for the new Microsoft Edge. They have assured that in case of a compatibility issue, they will provide support.
