General Electric announced this morning that Jamie Miller will be its next senior vice president and chief information officer.
She will be based at the American company’s headquarters in Fairfield, Connecticut and report to CEO Jeff Immelt. She succeeds Charlene Begley, who has taken a leave of absence for personal health reasons.
Women make up 24 percent of CIOs in Fortune 100 companies;a Wall Street Journal report from last year suggested that the position is ideal to catapult them into the top corporate spot, where they are severely underrepresented (7 percent of theFortune 100).
The 44-year-old was previously vice president, controller and chief accounting officer for GE, where she led a globally distributed team of about 3,500 accountants. Before that, she was the senior vice president, chief accounting officer and controller of WellPoint, Inc. She is a Miami University (Ohio) graduate.

“We have seen the growing strategic importance of information technology in enabling efficient operations and business processes,” Immelt said. “Jamie is the right person to lead this effort.”
Jan Hauser, a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers National Professional Services Group, will succeed Miller in her old position.
