Dan Drawbaugh has stepped down as chief information officer at UPMC after 30 years of service to the hospital giant to “pursue other professional interests,” UPMC announced Monday.
Ed McCallister, senior vice president, enterprise applications and business services, Information Services Division, will serve as interim CIO. Drawbaugh served 18 years as CIO, including overseeing UPMC’s adoption of an electronic health records system.
UPMC’s investment in EHR and other technologies over the past five years exceeded $1 billion.
Drawbaugh was named UPMC’s CIO in 1996. Under his leadership, the hospital giant signed agreements with IBM and Alcatel-Lucent, which greatly advanced computing capabilities at UPMC. His total compensation for 2012, the most recent figures available, was $1.6 million.
Drawbaugh is a graduate of Temple University, where he received an undergraduate degree in biomedical and electrical engineering. He also has an MBA from Duquesne University. Drawbaugh was recruited to be director of biomedical engineering at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in 1983 and became the hospital’s CIO in 1990. He joined UPMC when it acquired Shadyside Hospital in 1996.
Drawbaugh was not immediately available for comment Wednesday.
