Northwell Health will be utilizing the Allscripts Sunrise EHR system through 2027.
Northwell Health, New York’s largest health system, and the company’s EHR platform, Allscripts Sunrise extended their partnership through December 2027.
Northwell Health currently uses the Allscripts Sunrise EHR platform at 19 of its hospitals and it has been the New York health system’s preferred EHR system since 2005. The healthcare organization also uses Allscripts Touchworks at more than 750 Northwell Health-related outpatient practices that are under their umbrella.
“The power of Sunrise drives our system across nearly 20 locations, helping our organization deliver on our mission of improving the health of our communities,” says Northwell CIO, John Bosco. “Running successfully on one instance of the EHR proves especially beneficial for ensuring our thousands of clinicians can easily access consistent and comprehensive patient clinical information.”

Northwell previously extended its Allscripts TouchWorks EHR agreement in 2018.
“Allscripts partnership with our largest client, Northwell Health, has been a great success for the past 15 years. We are honored to continue pursuing our shared vision with such a brilliant thought leader in our industry,” said Allscripts CEO, Paul Black.
Allscripts Sunrise connects all aspects of acute, ambulatory, surgical, pharmacy, radiology, and laboratory services.
Sunrise is a user-friendly EHR platform that helps deliver true personalized care, the vendor says. Sunrise supports all core care venues across the system by delivering a single patient record, and features patient-centric capabilities that increase access and convenience, described the organization.
“Northwell is truly passionate about advancing its community’s health,” said Black. “Side by side we will continue to enhance Sunrise and co-develop the next generation of EHR as a new powerful solution, a tool for clinicians not only at Northwell but at other providers and for those they serve. It’s an honor to extend our partnership with Northwell and its visionary leadership.”
In early October, the two companies’ announced they were working together to develop a next-generation EHR.
This next-generation EHR will be cloud-based, voice-enabled, and based in artificial intelligence (AI). It will be designed and tested by Northwell’s clinicians, technology experts, and administrators with the goal of it being deployed systemwide.
“We are excited about the possibilities that this alliance with Allscripts will generate,” said Michael J. Dowling, Northwell Health’s president and CEO in early October. “Coupling Allscripts’ technology expertise with Northwell’s clinical and operational strengths will enable us to create a dynamic, patient-facing tool that will arm clinicians with knowledge to provide exceptional care to our patients.”
“Allscripts partnership with Northwell Health has been successful for many years and, together, we are positioned to develop and launch the electronic health record of tomorrow,” said Black in early October.
This is not the first time that Northwell Health has been in the news regarding cloud-based technology.
In early September, it installed a cloud-based secure messaging application to improve clinician communications. It uses the cloud to securely store data and is available on both mobile and desktop devices. The software is utilized to speed up patient care at Northwell’s Glen Cove Hospital, the first facility at which the health system has deployed the system.
The messaging app being used at Glen Cove Hospital is based on the Microsoft Teams app. There are currently 8,300 staff members within the Northwell Health system who utilize this app and it should be fully deployed throughout the entire health system by early 2020.
Northwell Health system has 23 hospitals, roughly 750 outpatient facilities, over 13,600 physicians, and over two million people who are annually cared for and is New York’s largest healthcare provider. Situated within the New York metro area and beyond, Northwell is located within the most densely populated area in the United States.
