Alliance Community Hospital will benefit from CommonWell interoperability services through its MEDITECH EHR system.
MEDITECH will extend CommonWell interoperability services to Ohio-based Alliance Community Hospital to improve health data exchange and care coordination among providers.
The non-profit community hospital is among the first to implement CommonWell services directly through its MEDITECH EHR system.
“We’re excited to be at the forefront of interoperability breakthroughs and technical innovation in healthcare,” said ACH Vice President of Operations and CIO David Shroades. “Even more importantly, we’re excited to bridge gaps in patient care, and deliver the best outcomes possible for our community.”
MEDITECH is the first health IT company part of the CommonWell network to deploy the Argonaut Project’s Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources specifications to customers to improve and document health data exchange. Through the use of FHIR, ACH providers will benefit from near real-time access to patient health information.

ACH patients and providers will also gain access to CommonWell services including patient enrollment capabilities and consolidated clinical document architecture exchange. Implementing and utilizing these interoperability services will set ACH on track to be able to exchange discrete segments of data in the future, including medication and allergy data.
“Interoperability is a cornerstone of MEDITECH’s healthcare IT vision and the deployment of CommonWell Health Alliance services in the MEDITECH EHR at Alliance Community Hospital is a testament to that,” said MEDITECH Associate Vice President of Strategy and CommonWell Health Alliance board member Lawrence O’Toole.
“Utilizing this contemporary architecture to enable providers to access health information nationwide further symbolizes MEDITECH’s commitment to work collaboratively to improve patient care,” O’Toole continued.
More than 9,300 care sites are currently live with CommonWell across the country. CommonWell members exchange health information on more than 30 million individuals.
“I’m proud of the unwavering commitment from CommonWell Members in continuing to expand the deployment of CommonWell services,” said CommonWell Health Alliance Executive Director Jitin Asnaani. “CommonWell congratulates MEDITECH for bringing its first customer Live on the network, an important leap forward in supporting our mission to break down the barriers to health data exchange.”
Founding members of CommonWell include Allscripts, athenahealth, Cerner, Change Healthcare, Evident, and Greenway Health.
MEDITECH, eClinicalWorks, and Kno2 are among CommonWell’s contributing members.
“As a contributor member, MEDITECH is continuing to help steer the future direction of CommonWell and provide our customers access to services that go beyond one EHR system, one healthcare organization, and one community,” said MEDITECH President and CEO Howard Messing “Together, we can advance nationwide connectivity and interoperability.”
MEDITECH announced the decision to begin deploying CommonWell interoperability services for users in June.
“CommonWell is excited to work with MEDITECH and other members as we continue to strive towards a reality in which there are no gaps in access and availability of patient data,” said Asnaani. “MEDITECH’s intention to deploy our services will help ensure we move even closer to that reality.”
The health IT company is also working to seamlessly integrate CommonWell services into clinical and administrative workflows. MEDITECH currently serves more than 2,400 users across 22 countries.
By extending CommonWell services to its users, MEDITECH is working to improve nationwide connectivity and interoperability across healthcare organizations, EHR systems, and regions.
“Advancing interoperability initiatives has always been a cornerstone of MEDITECH’s healthcare IT vision,” said O’Toole. “MEDITECH is proud to partner with CommonWell Health Alliance in providing our customers access to the CommonWell network, enabling faster and simpler exchange of protected health data across the care continuum.”
CommonWell currently includes more than 60 member organizations. In December 2016, CommonWell and Carequality signed an agreement to expand the reach of their respective networks and improve health data exchange for more than 90 percent of the acute EHR market.
