Officials at Highmark partner Penn State Health announced Tuesday that they intend to acquire the Holy Spirit Health System from Geisinger.
Holy Spirit has been part of the Geisinger Health System of Danville, Pa., since 2014.
The deal — the terms of which were not disclosed — will include Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, which is a Level II trauma center, as well as the Ortenzio Heart Center and the system’s outpatient practices and urgent care centers.
The transaction is expected to be completed by June 30, 2020, pending regulatory approval.
“This makes sense for both organizations, and more importantly for the people in the Cumberland County and Greater Harrisburg region,” said Penn State Health CEO Steve Massini in a release.
“By enabling our patients from Cumberland and Perry counties to be cared for closer to home at Holy Spirit, we can create increased capacity for patients in need of the kind of complex care that is only available in our region at Hershey Medical Center.”
He added that Penn State Health intends to honor Holy Spirit’s Catholic tradition and sponsorship by the Sisters of Christian Charity,
The acquisition also increases Pittsburgh-based Highmark’s presence in the central part of the state, as the insurer and Penn State Health announced a partnership in December 2017 which includes a joint $1 billion investment to develop community-based health care services.
Highmark subsequently made a $25 million grant to Penn State Health and its flagship Hershey Medical Center to expand its cancer research, improve access to drug trials and develop new medicines.
