Humana Inc. is expanding its presence across the nation with new health clinics.
The Louisville-based health insurance and health services provider and Boston-based Iora Health Inc. are opening 11 new Iora primary care clinics in Arizona, Georgia and Texas this fall, a news release said.
“Too often patients today are treated like a number. At Iora, we build our care upon healing relationships because we know when you invest in relationships, people stay healthier and lead happier lives,” Rushika Fernandopulle, co-founder and CEO of Iora Health, said in the release. “Humana has been an important partner of ours as we have grown around the country, delivering high-quality care to adults on Medicare.”
Iora Health specializes in caring for patients that are on Medicare Advantage plans and takes on a smaller patient load to ensure that the clinics provide more individualized care, care coordination and behavioral health to seniors, the release said. These clinics will only accept people with Medicare Advantage plans from Humana and people who have original Medicare with or without a supplement plan, Megan Prock McGrath, Iora Health public relations and communications director, said in an email.
Humana is an investor in Iora Health. It participated in a $100 million funding round that closed in May 2018. Iora Health was founded in 2011.
Medicare Advantage is a privately administered version of Medicare, the federal government health plan for people aged 65 and older or people with certain health conditions. Humana is one of the nation’s largest providers of Medicare Advantage plans which make up a major part of its revenue.
Humana had about four million members in its group and individual Medicare Advantage plans as of June 30, according to the company’s latest quarterly financial disclosure filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission. These plans accounted for about $12.4 billion of its $16.2 billion in revenue for the second quarter.
