Walmart is partnering with movie studio Metro Goldwyn Mayer to create original programming for Vudu, Walmart’s video-on-demand service, the retailer said Monday.
Walmart spokesman Justin Rushing told Reuters that MGM will create content exclusively for Vudu under the partnership.
“Under this partnership, MGM will create exclusive content based on their extensive library of iconic IP, and that content will premiere exclusively on the Vudu platform,” Rushing said, adding that the service will focus on family-friendly content.
Walmart and MGM will formally make the announcement Wednesday in Los Angeles, where they will also announce the name of the first production being created as part of the partnership.

The first MGM-produced original series for Vudu is expected to premiere in the first quarter of next year, according to Reuters.
Financial terms for the deal were not disclosed, Reuters reported.
Walmart acquired Vudu in 2010, but the streaming service has lagged behind competitors such as Netflix and Hulu. Bloomberg reported Monday that Vudu users spend just 1.9 hours a month on the platform, while Netflix users spend 25 hours a month on that platform.
The MGM-produced programs will appear on Vudu’s “Movies on Us” service, according to Bloomberg.
