No ‘normal person’ would switch from Oracle to AWS, says Larry Ellison.
Oracle’s CTO Larry Ellison has claimed that no ‘normal person’ would move from an Oracle data warehouse to an Amazon data warehouse in an extraordinary attack on AWS.
During a conference call after the release of the financial results for the second quarter, Ellison took a jab at Amazon. “We have a huge technology leadership in database over Amazon,” ZDNet cites Ellison.
“In terms of technology, there is no way that… any normal person would move from an Oracle database to an Amazon database.”

What makes the outburst more interesting is that Amazon recently switched from an Oracle data warehouse to one of its own.
Making the switch, Ellison says, “is just incredibly expensive and complicated. And you’ve got to be willing to give up tons of reliability, tons of security, tons of performance… Nobody, save maybe Jeff Bezos, gave the command, ‘I want to get off the Oracle database.”
Moving away from the talks about Amazon, he also said that Oracle will expand on its 50 per cent relational database market share. The main tools to help achieve that goal will be Oracle’s new Generation 2 Cloud infrastructure and its autonomous database technology.
This November, during Amazon’s re:Invent conference, AWS’s CTO Werner Vogels described Oracle’s database as ’90’s technology’. According to him, it’s cloud-native databases, and not relational databases, that are the basis of innovation.
Earlier this year, Ellison ridiculed Amazon’s idea of moving to its own data warehouse.
They’ve had 10 years to get off Oracle, and they’re still on Oracle,” he said. “They think of themselves as a competitor. It’s kind of embarrassing when Amazon uses Oracle.”
