Adding to an already busy year of leadership movement at Seattle-based Nordstrom, the company’s chief information officer has now announced his plan to retire from the retailer this fall.
Dan Little joined Nordstrom in 2002 and became chief information officer three years ago. He only meant to stay in the role for a few years, he told his team Wednesday.
“It was always my intent to spend the next several years continuing to build on the technology foundation we had in place and then eventually hand over leadership so I could then retire from the company,” he said in an email.
This announcement comes just weeks after Nordstrom’s chief technology officer, Kumar Srinivasan, left the company to return to India, which Little said gives Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN) the opportunity to take a look at its leadership structure and ensure it is “best aligned with our future ambitions.”

Nordstrom is searching for a chief technology officer who will absorb the responsibilities that were previously part of the chief information officer role, Little said. He will stay on to help with a smooth transition.
“This enables us to conduct a full search for our new CTO who will bring us the deep technical and strategic experience we’re after to lead technology at Nordstrom,” Nordstrom co-President Blake Nordstrom wrote in a companywide email.
Nordstrom is coming off a year of layoffs and declining sales due in no small part to changing shopping habits and a shift toward e-commerce that has hurt Nordstrom’s bottom line in recent quarters.
Little wrote to his team that they have worked hard over the last year to evolve the company’s operating model, vision and strategies to focus on delivering amazing customer experiences in a “multi-channel environment.”
With a foundation in place to scale the technology ecosystem for future growth, Little said it is time to start the transition he planned for since the beginning.
“I recognize there has been a lot of change over this past year, which can be challenging, but there is a lot to be excited about as well,” Little wrote to his team. “Technology is a key priority for Nordstrom and the executive team has never been more committed to supporting our future direction.”
