Microsoft has made progress on its effort to close the gender pay gap — but the software giant still hasn’t completely eliminated the divide.
“Today, for every $1 earned by men, our female employees in the U.S. earn 99.8 cents at the same job title and level,” Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of human resources Kathleen Hogan wrote in a Thursday blog post in honor of Equal Pay Day, a public awareness event intended to illustrate the gap between men’s and women’s wages.
The announcement comes a year and a half after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, in response to his controversial remarks at the Grace Hopper conference about women and pay raises, outlined a new diversity plan for the company, which included a focus on ensuring equal pay for equal work. At the time, female Microsoft employees in the U.S. earned 99.7 cents for every $1 earned by men.
Meanwhile, racial and ethnic minorities are faring better at Microsoft, earning $1.004 for every $1 earned by their Caucasian counterparts, Hogan revealed. Breaking it down, African-American employees earn $1.003, Hispanic/Latino(a) employees make 99.9 cents, and Asian employees make $1.006 for every $1 earned by Caucasian employees at the same job title and level.
