Renee Wynn launched into her new job as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s chief information officer on Monday, the same day NASA scientists announced new evidence pointing to the existence of liquid water on Mars.
A former senior IT manager at the Environmental Protection Agency, Ms. Wynn steps in for outgoing CIO Larry Sweet, who is set to retire from the agency in November after a 28-year career in the federal government.
Ms. Wynn joined NASA in July as deputy CIO. As the space agency’s IT chief, she will oversee efforts to ensure NASA’s information assets are in line with federal policies and work to boost collaboration among the agency’s geographically-dispersed space centers and other federal agencies. She will also be responsible for security and maximizing the use of enterprise and shared services, data analytics, visualization and other tools, according to the agency.
Prior to moving to NASA, Ms. Wynn served as as acting assistant administrator for the Office of Environmental Information, where she managed science, information management, and international programs. Her duties there included regulatory management, budget formulation and execution, grants and interagency agreements, long-term strategic planning and analyses, and environmental and administrative policy.

In addition to the IT arm of the EPA, she has also worked in the Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response and the Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance during her 25 year career at the agency.
Mr. Sweet joined NASA in 1987 as a contractor at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. He was was named CIO in June 2013 and will continue to work with the Office of the NASA Administrator, “to ensure a smooth transition of the CIO duties to Wynn,” the agency said in a blog post on its official website.
Ms. Wynn is a graduate of the EPA’s SES Candidate Devehttp://blogs.wsj.com/cio/2015/09/29/nasa-names-new-cio/lopment Program and has a bachelor of arts in economics from DePauw University.
