Walgreens, based in Deerfield, Illinois, had considered moving its headquarters to Switzerland following the buyout. The tactic is called a corporate inversion and is used to take advantage of lower tax rates.
The company decided against the move because the IRS probably wouldn’t approve an inversion, partly because of the terms of the Alliance Boots deal. It also acknowledged the public criticism, noting that many people were opposed to inversions and that it gets a lot of revenue from government-funded programs.
Its shares fell 21 cents to $85.84 in morning trading Friday.
