Visa Inc. is searching for a new chief information officer after Dennis Howard left in September to work as senior vice president of core technology services at Charles Schwab Corp.
“A search for a replacement is underway,” Visa spokeswoman Sandra Chu told CIO Journal via email. She said that the new CIO will report to Rajat Taneja, Visa’s executive vice president of technology and operations.
The move comes as tech leaders at financial service companies juggle several technology challenges, including cybersecurity threats and the shift to mobile payments. Hackers breached & Co.’s computer network earlier this year. Visa introduced additional security measures to protect consumers using Apple Inc.’s mobile payment service, which is launching in the U.S. on Oct. 20, reports Re/Code.
Mr. Howard worked as Visa’s CIO for the past eight months, after working in various senior technology roles at the payment card company since 2002. As CIO, he supported technology and systems, including voice and video communications, systems engineering and network operations, for more than 16,000 users across 60 offices in 40 countries.

At Charles Schwab, Mr. Howard is responsible for all core business applications, reporting to CIO Jim McGuire, according to a company spokesperson.
CIO turnover is high across most industries, and financial services is no exception. American International Group Inc. in September hired as CIO Philip Fasano, replacing Robert Dickie who left in February for Zurich Insurance Group Ltd.
