A Road Safety Club with students as members was launched at the Government Boys Higher Secondary School in Attur town on Thursday.
It was inaugurated by Rohini R. Bhajibhakare, District Collector, in the presence of V. Jayagowri, Regional Transport Officer, Attur, M. Selvan, Revenue Divisional Officer and Ponkarthik Kumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, at a function held in the school premises.
Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Bhajibhakare underlined the need for strict adherence to road rules by the vehicle users and the general public for saving precious human lives.
She said that the district administration and the Transport Department in coordination with other departments have been regularly organising road safety awareness programmes in different parts of the district. This has brought down the rate of road mishaps to a big extent.
Thanks to the awareness programmes, the accident rate in the district has come down by 50 per cent during the period from January to May this year, compared to the corresponding period last year.
She lauded the role played by the student community in creating awareness among the general public which enabled in containing dengue in the district in a big way during its recent out-break.
The students should play a similar role in creating awareness on the road safety norms among their relatives, neighbours and friends.
Referring to the Road Safety Club, Ms. Bhajibhakare said that this was a part of the initiative to enrol student community in the road safety activities. Steps have been taken to set up similar clubs in all schools in the district. She said that the Transport Department officials will impart training to the members of the club soon.
The Collector said that the Transport Department alone will not be able to check the accident rate and called upon the other departments to extend cooperation in this initiative.
The Collector on the occasion inaugurated the road safety display board and also gave away the reflective jackets to the student members of the club.
Sennu Krishnan, Attur Municipal Commissioner, and Mariappan, headmaster of the school, were present on the occasion.
