Fire broke out in a scrapyard in Guru Nanak Nagar area wherein old car parts were stored. The fire also got spread to a house adjoining the scrap yard, but the flames were controlled by the firefighters on time. The reason behind the fire incident is yet to be ascertained.
The fire broke out at 3.15pm and it took around 3 hours for firemen to douse the flames. Four fire tenders were pressed into service.
Meanwhile, panic gripped the area after residents saw massive fire and thick smoke. The residents cleared the house adjoining the scrap yard, taking items like gas cylinder, wooden material to a safe place.
The residents also alleged that the fire brigade came around half an hour late which helped fire to spread.
Fire safety official Raj Kumar said it took some time for the fire tenders to reach the spot due to nagar kirtan, organized on the way. He said firefighters controlled the blaze before it could damage the nearby houses. Wooden windows at a house caught fire, but the flames were doused in time.
He said no casualty was reported from the spot as the man who was working inside the scrap yard ran outside. As the reason behind the fire is not clear, the department will conduct an inquiry on Sunday morning, he added.
