The Supreme Court has asked the road transport ministry to hold a meeting with state governments and come out with a concrete action plan to reduce road crashes and fatalities. This direction is being seen as the last chance for central and state governments to submit their interventions before the apex court takes up the case of increasing deaths on roads on September 19.
The SC direction came last week after the panel appointed by the apex court on road safety submitted that the Centre and states were not doing enough to check fatalities and injuries in road crashes. The panel submitted that the SC should issue direction to state governments to implement the identified road safety measures. In the past, the SC-appointed panel held several rounds of discussions dealing with road safety issues.
