Tribeni Tissues Vidyapith in Hooghly observed road safety week from January 1, when student volunteers spoke to people about the need to follow traffic rules.
They distributed two kinds of slips to motorists one which requested commuters to follow road rules and the other thanked those who followed the law.
Banners and placards were prepared to highlight important rules that citizens should follow on the roads, such as wearing helmets, using seat belts, not speeding, and so on.
According to a report, around 4.5 lakh road accidents take place in India every year, in which 14 lakh lose their lives and 4.8 lakh are injured. Around 34% of the accidents are the result of speeding.
The most striking finding is that 32% of the deaths among paramilitary personnel are due to road accidents, while merely 7% deaths are during anti-terrorism operations. This proves that road accidents are a bigger problem than terror, an official said.
The impact of the road safety week programme was visible from the second day onwards as there were fewer rule breakers as the days went on.
The Hooghly institute project is part of the initiative taken up by the government and included in school curricula to spread awareness, especially among the youth. It is now an annual event.
