Nordstrom is trying out a new concept, starting in its Bellevue store.
On July 26, the wraps will come off of an area called Habitant, a cocktail lounge and limited eatery opening on level two, right by the escalator in the middle of the heavily trafficked women’s apparel area.
The metal letters spelling out the name were being tacked up July 18, and the whole area is currently hidden by drop cloths. But Nordstrom’s Brook White says when Habitant opens, artisan cocktails will be served there, and small eats. And a plethora of seasoned sales people in the area all say it is a bar.
Nordstrom, which has 117 stores around the country, hopes this will serve as a kind of gathering place in a convenient area of the store. The company will be watching to see how it is received, which will determine whether these bars will be built in other stores.

Nordstrom currently has at least eight other restaurants with bars in them within some of their stores, but this open-concept casual bar, in the middle of a highly shopped area and by an escalator, is the first in the whole chain.
You may feel the need of drink with the Nordstrom anniversary sale going on. The sale, a tradition that has achieved a kind of cult status, started Friday at 8 o’clock in the morning! The anniversary sale has built up a generational following over the decades. This sale goes back almost 80 years, inherited from Best Apparel, a Seattle-based women’s clothing store that Nordstrom, then a retail shoe business, purchased in 1963. The Nordstrom family then made the anniversary sale into an event that offers top quality and new, high-fashion merchandise, which they mark way down, for the upcoming fall/winter season.
