Walmart is suspending the sale of all over-the-counter ranitidine products at its stores and Sam’s Clubs including Zantac, Equate and Member’s Mark brands.
CVS Health, Walgreens and Rite Aid have also stopped selling Zantac.
The largest U.S. retailer said it was taking the action after closely monitoring the recent product alert from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA said ranitidine products contain low levels of a potentially dangerous chemical (nitrosodimethylamine) that may cause cancer.
Zantac and generic drugs with ranitidine have been used to treat ulcers and reflux disease. It’s the same chemical that led to recent recalls of dozens of prescription blood pressure drugs.
