Publix Super Markets ranked No. 74 on a list of the 100 best places for millennials to work by Fortune Magazine this year.
The Lakeland-based grocery store chain is no newcomer to lists and awards. Every year the company is praised for being one of the best places to work and for customer satisfaction from a variety of sources. But being recognized for employing millennials? That’s a first for Publix.
Publix is known for its top notch employee benefits. The company makes a contribution to each employee’s retirement account in the form of Publix stock every year. With more than 177,000 employees in six states, nearly 10,000 have worked for the company for 20 years or more, which is significant for a company of its size.
There isn’t a similar list for loyal employees who are in their 20s or 30s. Though roughly 47 percent of its part-time and full-time workforce is under the age of 30, Publix isn’t immune to the challenges many companies face to recruit and retain millennial workers. There are no ping pong tables and fridges stocked full of craft beer in the Publix break rooms popular in some start-up companies that focus on hiring millennials.

Millennials, born in the 1980s and 1990s, make up the majority of the country’s workforce. Also known as Generation Y, they surpassed the baby boomers as the nation’s largest living generation this year, too, according to U.S. Census Bureau. They also tend to bounce around from job to job more often than their older co-workers.
Publix is one of four companies that landed on the best places to work for millennials list by Fortune and the only one in Central Florida.
Fortune partners with research partners to survey more than 88,000 millennials at more than 600 companies that have been ranked as a great place to work.
