Stater Bros. Markets said Monday Pete Van Helden is adding the title of CEO, effective Jan. 4.
He has been president and chief operating officer of the San Bernardino, Calif.-based retailer since 2013.
Jack Brown, who has been CEO for 36 years, will become executive chairman of the board.
Van Helden is a 38-year industry veteran, beginning his career in 1977 as a bagger at a Rosauers store in Libby, Mont. He joined Albertsons a year later and spent 28 years there in a variety of positions, ultimately serving as president of the company’s Southern California division.

When Supervalu acquired portions of Albertsons in 2006, Van Helden oversaw the distributor’s retail operations in the western U.S., and in 2009 he was promoted to EVP, with oversight for all retail operations, before he left to join Stater Bros.
Stater operates 168 supermarkets in Southern California.
