The NRF Global Retail CEO Council is a high-profile group of chief executives from the world’s leading retail companies promoting the retail sector’s interests worldwide. The council hopes to serve as:
- A strong voice for retail
- A respected communications partner with governments and society
- A driving force for developing a global roadmap for the retail industry
- A sponsor of talented, hard-working people
The council plans to address topics such as workforce size and makeup, and will take an active role with legislative issues affecting retail operations and retail jobs worldwide. Membership is open to chief executives of retail companies with operations outside the United States who would like to play a role in improving the image and influence of the retail industry.
The council held its first meeting as top executives from international retail companies gathered in Paris in September 2014. The group will play a critical role as a think tank to strengthen the image and future of global retail. With that in mind, the council will work on a global level to address issues affecting the retail industry:

In countries around the world, retail serves a vital role as the interface between manufacturers and consumers. Globally, retail is the-third largest industry, impacting one in four jobs worldwide. Retail offers flexible employment, and three out of four retail employees are women. More than 1 billion consumers buy from retail companies each day, with $13.2 trillion expected to change hands in 2015.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE RETAIL INDUSTRY
Consumers are increasingly concerned not just about price and quality, but about the environmental sustainability of the products they buy, where they come from and how they are obtained. Retailers are responding by cooperating closely with suppliers to develop sustainable practices that are socially and ecologically responsible.
DEMANDS ON POLITICS
Retail is dependent on policies that encourage stable economic development. Policymakers often lack adequate expertise about retail and adopt regulations that restrict retail without consideration for long-term impacts on infrastructure, employment and economic stability. Retailers must make lawmakers and decision-makers aware of the industry’s critical importance to the world’s economy.
