Cincinnati-based Macy’s Inc. plans to make cutbacks affecting employees at its downtown Pittsburgh offices, according to a filing with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry.
“This is regional and district offices that happen to be located in downtown Pittsburgh above the store,” Macy’s spokesman Jim Sluzewski said in a voicemail. “We are combining administrative regions and districts. We are combining two Pittsburgh district offices into one office.”
The public notice was made to satisfy requirements of the federal Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification, or WARN. Macy’s said the layoffs were planned to take effect in mid-March, according to the filing. Sluzewski said the actual layoffs will be 32 as the responsibilities of 69 positions listed in the WARN notice are combined.
The company reported in early January it planned to lay off 2,500 people nationwide, which is expected to generate $100 million per year in cost savings. While the company also indicated it planned to close five stores, none were in Pittsburgh.

Clarification: An earlier version of the story based on the WARN notice stated that Macy’s was laying off 69 people. In meeting the notification requirements, Macy’s reported to the state of Pennsylvania that 69 positions would be affected through staff reductions. But the company emphasized that less than half that number will be actual layoffs.
