Marks & Spencer is planning to more than double its presence in India to around 80 stores by 2016.
As a result of the expansion, India will overtake Turkey to become M&S’ largest international market.
The retailer unveiled the plans during CEO Marc Bolland’s visit to India to celebrate the recent opening of its 35,000 sq ft flagship store in Bandra, Mumbai.
The store is the largest of the 36 M&S stores in India. It also contains its first lingerie and beauty department, through which M&S will sell make-up in the country for the first time.

M&S will work with existing partner Reliance Retail to expand its estate in India.
“India is a priority market for M&S and working closely together with our partner Reliance Retail we have set a clear plan to build a leadership position here,” said Bolland.
In the first phase of the store rollout, M&S will open eight stores by the end of March 2014.
