When it comes to delivering mail, rain, snow and sleet failed to do what Sundays always have: Stop service.
Until now.
A new partnership between Amazon and the U.S. Postal Service will see packages delivered to Amazon Prime customers* seven days a week. The program will be rolled out in just New York and Los Angeles to start, but will soon be expanded to other major U.S. cities like Dallas and Phoenix, according to a press release from the company.
“If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you can order a backpack for your child on Friday and be packing it for them Sunday night,” said Dave Clark, Amazon’s vice president of worldwide operations and customer service in the statement. “We’re excited that now every day is an Amazon delivery day and we know our Prime members, who voraciously shop on Amazon, will love the additional convenience they will experience as part of this new service.”

The U.S. Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe added that the increase of online shopping made this move logical for the Postal Service. According to the New York Times, package delivery is one lucrative aspect to the money-losing Postal Service portfolio. Last year, the USPS lost $16 billion. The move could also help the USPS take some business from FedEx FDX +0.29% and UPS, private mail carrier rivals that do not currently deliver on Sundays. The Postal Service plans on making similar deals with other retailers, it told the Times.
