Sainsbury’s has reported a 1.8% increase in full-year like-for-like sales, excluding fuel.
In a trading update released this morning, the supermarket revealed like-for-likes rose 3.6%, including fuel, in the 10 weeks to 16 March. Total sales rose 6.3%, excluding fuel, during the quarter.
Strong growth also continued in its convenience and online businesses, which Sainsbury’s said grew at over 18% year-on-year and nearly 20% year-on-year respectively.
Its general merchandise and clothing business was also growing at nearly three times the rate of food and its relaunched standard own-label range By Sainsbury’s was growing at around 9% year-on-year.

Sainsbury’s also said it opened 14 new supermarkets and 87 convenience stores, and extended eight stores during the year.
“We have delivered strong sales in the fourth quarter, increasing market share and outperforming in what remains a tough retail environment,” said Sainsbury’s CEO Justin King.
“Over the quarter we grew customer transactions to 22.9 million per week, serving more customers than ever. Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day were both particularly strong this year, and we closed the quarter with a very successful Red Nose Day.”
