Waitrose and the discounters remain the big winners in the grocery sector according to the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel, as a resurgent Tesco leads the big four.
Aldi, Lidl and Waitrose notched up sales growth of 28.2%, 10% and 8% respectively, in the 12 weeks to 20 January. All three increased their market share during the period, with Aldi’s growing from 2.5% to 3.1%.
Tesco, meanwhile, posted sales growth of 3.3% – the highest of the big four – but only just ahead of Sainsbury’s which saw sales increase 3.2%.
Morrisons sales dropped 1.7% during the 12 weeks, with its market share falling from 12.5% to 11.9%, while the Co-op continued its strong run, with sales growth of 0.6%.

“Tesco’s positive results are a sign of stabilisation as the retailer gets back on track with its customers,” said Kantar Worldpanel director Edward Garner.
“However, this improvement has put some pressure on the rest of the big four with Morrisons in particular suffering a drop in sales and a share decline of 0.6 percentage points in the latest period.”
