HealthSouth Corp. said the company is cooperating fully with an investigation by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, but also said no determination of improper or fraudulent billings at four of its hospitals have been made.
As I reported earlier today, four of the Birmingham-based company’s hospitals have received HHS subpoenas connected to an investigation of alleged improper or fraudulent claims submitted to Medicare or Medicaid. The subpoenas are seeking information about compliance with Medicare claim rules.
In its statement, HealthSouth said the investigation won’t affect the day-to-day operations of its hospitals. The company also said it won’t provide any further comment because of the ongoing investigation.
The company said the investigation was not a surprise, since HHS has been increasing its scrutiny of inpatient rehabilitation providers – and HealthSouth is the largest such provider in the nation.
