Sanford Health has added India to its list of countries under exploration for foreign expansion.
The health network will consider whether a clinic there would be able to support itself economically while providing services to children in need, Ruth Krystopolski, executive vice president of development and research, said.
India, with 1.2 billion people, has the world’s second largest population, behind China at 1.3 billion.
Sanford has main offices in Sioux Falls and Fargo. It has opened a series of medical facilities outside its main service area of the Upper Midwest since 2009. In the U.S., those units have been in Oklahoma, California and Oregon, with another site in Las Vegas now under consideration. Internationally, Sanford has opened four clinics in the African nation of Ghana. It has plans to open in Ireland and Mexico this year and Israel next year. It is considering moves to China, Bolivia, Ecuador and Costa Rica in addition to India.
