The Massachusetts-based health system will implement MEDITECH EHR for across its 225 physician practices.
Berkshire Health System in Massachusetts recently chose MEDITECH after an EHR selection process and will implement the solution across its 225 physician practices.
The health system signed an EHR contract to implement MEDITECH’s web-based Expanse EHR system, as well as MEDITECH Ambulatory and MEDITECH Acute Care.
“Having an EHR with the flexibility for our on-call physicians to easily access patient records from a variety of mobile and web-based platforms is vital to advancing BHS operational efficiencies,” said Medical Director of Informatics at BHS ambulatory physician practices Mark Snowise, MD.

The health system selected MEDITECH as part of an effort to improve interoperability across facilities to ensure clinicians have access to a complete picture of patient health across all care settings.
BHS will have the opportunity to customize MEDITECH’s ambulatory EHR solution and integrate the solution with Expanse to provide users with a single schedule. Providers can use the schedule to combine appointments across multiple care settings, streamline referral management, and utilize revenue cycle management tools.
“The improved user interface really appealed to BHS clinicians, and we’re excited to substantially improve efficiency,” said BHS Medical Director of Informatics Acute Care David Albert, MD. “The web-based platform features advanced technologies beneficial to our organization’s performance, particularly the real-time safety and surveillance tools.”
Clinicians will also have the opportunity to leverage health IT tools integrated into Expanse to optimize clinical workflows, improve population health management, and achieve quality improvement goals.
“We wanted the ability to seamlessly manage our patient population as they transition from one care setting to another,” said Snowise. “Having access to customizable surveillance status boards and clinical results will enable our users to effectively monitor patient conditions and increase communication to avoid negative outcomes.”
BHS has had a relationship with MEDITECH since 2000.
“We expect that these improved transitions of care will lead to decreased readmission and a better patient and clinician experience,” said Albert. “MEDITECH has the best customer service in the industry. We know we can reach a live person 24 hours per day who will do everything within their power to assist our Clinical and Information Technology team.”
Management consulting and information technologies services firm Santa Rosa Consulting will assist BHS with the EHR implementation process.
“I’ve always been impressed with MEDITECH’s perceptiveness to our customer feedback and their agility responding to critical concerns,” stated Snowise.
MEDITECH has won several EHR contracts in recent months.
Earlier this month, Missouri-based Citizens Memorial Hospital and Citizens Memorial Health Care went live with a new MEDITECH EHR implementation.
The upgrade marked the hospital’s transition to the EHR vendor’s web-based offering, Expanse.
Expanse is designed to allow providers to adapt to the increasingly open, virtual healthcare landscape across care settings for more comprehensive patient care delivery. The EHR solution also includes functionality and features designed to promote user satisfaction and clinical productivity.
Citizens Memorial Hospital will have the opportunity to leverage new EHR functionality, streamline clinical workflows, and utilize a simpler user interface designed to optimize EHR usability.
Clinicians and administrative staff part of the hospital network’s clinic, long-term care, home care, and hospital will use the single instance of MEDITECH for all administrative, clinical, and financial operations as part of the system launch.
Staff also participated in extensive EHR training as part of the transition to familiarize themselves with the system prior to go-live.
Ensuring all staff receive adequate training is key to ensuring a smooth EHR implementation process, reducing slowdowns in the early days after go-live, and promoting clinician engagement with EHR technology.
