Microsoft is now the cloud provider for Allscripts’ cloud-based EHR platform, which aims to increase interoperability, increase usability, and improve patient experience.
Allscripts has extended its partnership with Microsoft for another five years, which results in the vendor tapping the software giant as its cloud provider for its cloud-based EHR platform.
Along with making Microsoft the cloud provider for its cloud-based solution, the two organizations aim to work together to further expand Allscripts’ health IT development.
Allscripts will leverage the Microsoft software platform, along with its tools, such as Microsoft Azure, Power BI, and Microsoft Teams, to enhance its user experience and reduce burden.

“The COVID-19 pandemic will forever change how healthcare is delivered, and provider organizations around the world must ensure they are powered by innovative, interoperable, comprehensive and lower-cost IT solutions that meet the demands of our new normal,” Paul Black, chief executive officer of Allscripts, said in a statement.
Organizations across the country are also facing hurdles with the new transition to remote work, making cloud-based EHR products more emendable to individuals not working physically inside the medical facility.
“Healthcare delivery is no longer defined by location—providers need to have the capability to reach patients where they are to truly deliver the care they require,” continued Black.
“Cloud solutions, mobile options, telehealth functionality—these are the foundational tools for not just the future of healthcare, but the present. Collaborating with Microsoft, the leader in the public cloud sector, we will efficiently deliver the tools caregivers need to improve the clinical outcomes of their patients and operational performance of their organizations.”
The cloud-based EHR platform aims to enhance interoperability, improve patient experience, ease usability, and increase organizational effectiveness.
Along with those hands-on enhancements, the cloud-based subscription model lowers annual optimization costs, delivers fast implementations, and lends access to a vendor health IT team to decrease burden on internal IT resources.
Additionally, cloud-based solutions provide added security and flexibility to further optimize the EHR as technology advances and evolves. The vendor also said it will include an expanded set of analytics and insights on EHR functionality.
“Through our strategic alliance with Allscripts, we aspire to be a transformational force in the healthcare industry, delivering smarter, innovative solutions that power the essential human connections of care delivery and create a healthier future for patients worldwide,” said Patty Obermaier, vice president of US Health and Life Sciences at Microsoft.
By the end of the calendar year, the vendor said its clients will be able to utilize a healthcare app marketplace for third parties to use with their respective EHRs.
“At Microsoft, we believe the future of healthcare is an interoperable one, where cloud-enabled solutions will be critical in putting patients fully in charge of their own healthcare information,” concluded Obermaier. “With this collaboration, Allscripts is working to make that future a reality.”
This deal comes after the tumble Allscripts took in its Q1 earnings, which totaled only $205 million, compared to the $286 million it reported at the same time last year, mostly due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
The vendor also took a cut in revenue, generating $417 million in Q1, compared to $432 million in Q1 of 2019.
“Our first quarter results show continued strength in new bookings, which reflects the confidence our clients have in our solutions,” Black said at the time of the earnings call.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges for our clients and thus for our business. The pandemic accentuates the importance of mission-critical EMR solutions, and the value of actionable real time data and analytics to better care for a new cohort of critically ill patients.”
