Add Phelps Health to the lengthy list of healthcare organizations who will utilize the Epic EHR platform.
Phelps Health, one of Missouri’s leading healthcare organizations, has selected Epic Systems for its new EHR, connecting all of their centers on one unified platform.
“We are proud to partner with Epic, a well-known leader in providing healthcare software for hospitals and healthcare systems worldwide,” said Phelps Health President and CEO Ed Clayton. “The Epic electronic health record system represents a major investment in our healthcare system and will tie in all of our departments, clinics and offices via this system.”
Epic allows Phelps Health providers to quickly access information and connect with their patients. In just seconds, patient documents will be easily available.

What’s more, the new EHR system will allow providers to access patients’ medical information from disparate hospitals or clinics. When a patient is sent to a specialist, for example, the Epic platform allows for easy access without having to waste time finding hard copies of the documents.
This will come in handy for patients and providers at Phelps Health, which is home to more than 100 providers, a 242-bed hospital, and several clinics across Missouri within a six-county area. Serving over 200,000 patients in south-central Missouri, the health system has a large footprint that will soon be connected via the Epic Systems tool.
The health system will also adopt the Epic Systems patient portal, which gives patients access to their own health information. Using MyChart, the patient can retrieve her own health information, pay bills, and communicate with their providers using the mobile app or website.
Epic is the largest EHR vendor in the country and more than 250 million patients have a current electronic record with them. Epic Systems regularly earns a top spot on the annual Best in KLAS rankings, and a great number of US News and World Report’s top-ranked hospitals and medical schools use Epic, leaders from Phelps Health said.
Senior leadership at the company expressed excitement for the EHR selection, saying they are in good company with several other leading organizations across the country utilizing the EHR vendor’s tools.
“While this is a large undertaking for our organization, partnering with Epic allows for a tremendous opportunity to streamline care across our health system,” said Phelps Health Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Jason Shenefield.
Phelps Health and Epic signed the contract earlier this year and the implementation process is currently occurring. Phelps expects this project to go live by late-2020.
“The good news is we’re going into this in a very strong financial position,” Clayton said to reporters from the Phelps County Focus. “About half the hospitals in the state couldn’t say that right now. We’ve been able to weather a financial storm that’s been out there for some of our peers. These investments we’re making in our organization will benefit not only us operationally, but it will benefit our patients as we move forward.”
Several hospitals across the country have recently adopted Epic Systems EHR. At Tower Health in Pennsylvania, Epic Systems was implemented in August 2019.
“A single, shared EHR will bring patients’ health information from Tower Health hospitals and physician practices into one record, which will in turn lead to enhanced clinical decisions, outcomes, and a seamlessly coordinated patient experience,” said Tower Health President and CEO Clint Matthews.
“Ultimately, patients and the Tower Health communities benefit by having physicians sharing best practices and using a common platform for caring for patients, eliminating redundancies, ensuring high quality results and enabling patient access to their records and results in real time,” said Michelle Trupp, senior vice president and CIO at Tower Health, in an email to Daily Times.
