Southeast Minnesota is losing another Mayo Clinic facility after the hospital system announced the closure of its location in La Crescent.
Mayo Clinic Health Systems has confirmed it will close the clinic on Nov. 22 and transition its services to nearby facilities in Caledonia, Minnesota, and La Cross and Onalaska, in Wisconsin.
Michael Morrey, the Mayo Clinic Health System Regional Chairman of Administration, said: “This was a difficult and well-considered decision.”
“We are exploring ways that we can provide health care services more efficiently and effectively while being good stewards of our resources,” he added.

There have been a handful of Mayo Clinic closures affecting the southeast region in recent years.
Last year, Adams, Minnesota, lost its Mayo Clinic health center when its only doctor decided to move to the main facility in Rochester, while residents of LeRoy lost their clinic a year earlier.
Mayo Clinic made the announcement at 6 p.m. on Friday, noting that La Crescent patients will be notified over the coming weeks.
Speaking to the Post Bulletin, a Mayo Clinic spokesman said the La Crescent clinic’s proximity to other, larger campuses meant too many resources were being diverted to the smaller location.
But not everyone at the clinic was aware of the shutdown, with the newspaper saying someone answered the phone at the La Crescent clinic and, upon being informed of the impending closure, replied with: “Are you kidding me?”
