Nevada health information exchange HealtHIE Nevada established connectivity with the nation’s VA care sites.
Nevada’s statewide health information exchange recently established a connection with the Department of Veterans Affairs to enhance care coordination and data sharing among Nevada community providers and military care sites across the country.
According to Las Vegas Sun, HealtHIE Nevada will enable VA care providers and patients to utilize its secure network to access, exchange, and use patient EHRs in care delivery.
“This type of connection is essential to ensure that our veterans have equal access to medical care whether at the VA or in the community,” stated HealtHIE Nevada Executive Director Michael Gagnon. “Without this type of connection, veterans would have to collect and transport their own paper records to all their providers.”

“The connection allows all VA and community doctors and nurses to view patient events, laboratory results, radiology reports, medications, discharge information and care summaries all in real time,” Gagnon continued.
Statewide HIEs in Rhode Island and New York, including the Rochester Regional Health Information Organization, have also established bidirectional health data exchange with VA to improve veteran health record access and patient care.
Currently, there are more than 226,000 veterans in Nevada. Veteran patients in the state often receive care through both VA medical facilities and from non-VA community care providers. The new connection with HealtHIE Nevada will ensure VA providers can access patient health data from local healthcare organizations including Renown Health, Dignity Health, Saint Mary’s Medical Center, UMC, Valley Health System, Reno Diagnostic Center, and others.
When veteran patients receive care from community healthcare organizations in the state, these providers will also be able to access medical records contained with the VA network.
“We’re honored to help our veterans by allowing doctors and other healthcare providers access to records in a seamless and secure manner,” wrote Gagnon.
The new service will be live and available for veterans in July 2019.
“This new service is designed to enhance care coordination between VA and local health care facilities,” stated Gagnon. “While veterans do not have direct access to the clinical data in the health information exchange, they can make their providers aware of this new service and request that community providers participate.”
HealtHIE Nevada currently connects more than 70 healthcare organizations, including physician practices, hospitals, labs, and other types of healthcare organizations. HIE participants can use HealtHIE Nevada to share and access information about patient encounters, medication lists, medical images, test results, and care summaries.
HealtHIE Nevada has made several recent efforts to boost connectivity and enhance interoperability for providers across the state.
Earlier this month, the HIE partnered with RosettaHealth to enhance interoperability between provider EHR systems.
HealtHIE Nevada will use RosettaHealth’s HealthBus solution to more easily translate health data transport protocols.
HealthBus is a software-as-a-service solution that offers users full HIE capabilities related to sending and receiving information. HIE participants can use the solution for standardized exchange formats including push, query, and retrieve exchange, as well as HL7 Virtual Private Networks, Direct messaging, and Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources.
“This collaboration equates to a more seamless experience for providers as well as patients throughout the Silver State,” said Gagnon. “Thanks to our partnership with RosettaHealth, we’ll be able to improve access to patient data and expand our offerings.”
“This includes the enhancement of patient-centered data home capabilities and the sharing of medical records for patients in need of care in-state and outside of Nevada,” he added.
The SaaS solution also offers users real-time data analytics capabilities, including detailed connection status information, metrics, and logs about different care facilities, data feeds, and protocols.
