LaGrangeville, N.Y.-based Health Quest Systems will install IBM Watson Health’s artificial intelligence-powered clinical trial matching system throughout its hospitals.
The cognitive computing system matches patients to clinical trials they may be eligible for, eliminating the need to manually compare enrollment criteria with patient medical data. The health system aims to increase clinical trial enrollment with the new technology.
“While clinical trials offer patients access to promising new and emerging treatments, only 5 percent of adult patients with cancers participate in clinical trials. As a result, 80 percent of clinical trials fail to meet enrollment timelines and requirements,” IBM Watson Health Vice President and Chief Health Officer Kyu Rhee said in a news release.
One year after implementing IBM’s clinical trial matching system in 2016, Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic saw an almost 80 percent increase in breast cancer clinical trial enrollment.
