Nearly 30 years after the merger, Immanuel-St. Joseph’s Hospital became part of Mayo Clinic Health System. Since then, Mayo Clinic has been involved in shaping Mankato’s health care scene.
In March 1996, Mayo Health System assumed the responsibility of Immanuel St. Joseph’s hospital.
“When Mayo clinic first joined the community in 1996, it was an opportunity for us to bring Mayo Clinic care to the community of Mankato and the surrounding area we serve,” Mayo Clinic Regional Vice President Dr. James Hebl said.
For many years, the ISJ name remained in conjunction with Mayo Health System.

While you can still see the original cross-shaped building built in 1953, the Mayo Clinic campus has since expanded.
“Over the period of years, we have added support space, we’ve added the Andreas Cancer Center, we’ve added the Mayo Clinic heart center, as well as our operating rooms, and we continue to add to that existing campus,” Dr. Hebl said.
The hospital continues to grow, with a $90 million dollar expansion being built on the campus. It’s all part of their plan to continually transform to meet Mankato’s needs.
“We are transitioning away from acute care and reactionary medicine, to more proactive care and focusing on the wellness of our communities,” Dr. Hebl said.
