Mackenzie Health has launched a new electronic medical record aimed to help patients and physicians make better health decisions.
Designed by American-based Epic Systems, it’s the first full-suite Epic EMR to be installed in a Canadian hospital. It was launched on July 8 and includes several features for patients, including self-serve registration to scheduled appointments with a health card.
“The launch of the new electronic medical record is one of the largest transformational projects in Mackenzie Health’s history and puts us at the forefront of care delivery,” said chief of staff Steven Jackson.
Appointment registration is faster with an “e-check-in” feature through the website and app MyChart.

Mackenzie Health’s EMR works in collaboration with MyChart to give patients the option of registering for an appointment online — up to seven days prior.
Additionally, patients can view their personal health information, view and cancel appointments and communicate with care providers via text. Care providers and physicians will also be able to easily access health records when necessary.
Mackenzie Health hopes the EMR will increase medication safety and reduce chance of error.
Development of the EMR took two years in a process involving software development, consultation, testing and education.
Two weeks prior to launch, 100 Mackenzie Health staff transitioned over 15,000 appointments to the new EMR.
