Donostia University Hospital has been awarded with an EMRAM Stage 6 recognition by HIMSS Analytics Europe. The hospital joins seven other Spanish hospitals that have also achieved this prestigious status of digital maturity. With 1,054 beds, their main EMR product is OSABIDE GLOBAL.
Donostia University Hospital’s CIO, Ramón Lerchundi, said: “The process of the certification involved different hospital stakeholders, including the clinicians, managers and IT staff. Doing the evaluation process, we noticed that there were still some issues which could be improved. As such, the attitude of the hospital staff was really driven by a joint mission to make the hospital a better place.
“This certification is the result of a work that begun a long time ago. Digitisation is not an on/off switch. It is a process that started years ago in which lots of healthcare professionals within the hospital have slowly changed their mindset; and today, the achievement of the Stage 6 recognition is the natural evolution of that process. We are honoured to have received this award. However, the process of digitisation is an ongoing one because there will always be room for better care: this is not the end!”
John Rayner, Regional Director of HIMSS Analytics in Europe and Latin America, added: “Donostia University Hospital has made remarkable progress to fulfil all the requirements needed to achieve an EMRAM Stage 6 level. We were extremely impressed with the dedication and motivation of the team that is driving the digitisation project and the vision of the hospital management and medical staff to embrace digitisation in order to improve quality of care and patient safety.”

Donostia University Hospital representatives received the award at eHealth Week, in Malta on 11 May. The event is organised by HIMSS Europe and has the support of the European Commission and the World Health Organisation and gathered 1,000 health IT professionals and governmental leaders.
The EMR Adoption Model is an eight stage system that measures digital maturity in a hospital, with 0 the lowest and Stage 7 the highest level. Achieving EMRAM Stage 6 reflects that the hospital is well on the way to achieving a fully paperless patient record environment and using Information Technology in a smart way to improve care quality, safety and efficiency. There are only three hospitals in Europe with a current and valid Stage 7 certification.
