Dr. Donald W. Rucker, a longtime Siemens Healthcare USA physician executive, has been named head of the federal Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. ONC is a 13-year-old segment of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that serves as a leadership and resource center for health IT implementation and optimization efforts.
Rucker was chief medical officer of Malvern, Pa.-based Siemens Healthcare USA from 2000 until 2013, two years before German parent Siemens AG sold the Siemens Health Services IT division to Cerner Corp. of North Kansas City, Mo. Rucker went on to hold a similar position at Premise Health, a corporate wellness firm based in Brentwood, Tenn. He also took a faculty appointment at the Ohio State University as a professor of clinical emergency medicine and of biomedical informatics.
A spokeswoman for HHS said late Friday that the department is not commenting on matters related to personnel.
