Midland Health has selected EHR vendor Cerner Corporation for its clinical, revenue cycle management, and population health management needs, according to a press release.
The move will connect the many community clinics and the 474-bed Midland Memorial Hospital which are a part of the Texas-based health system. Until this announcement, various sites used disparate health technology systems.
“When considering which supplier would best support Midland Health, we were focused on specific important capabilities,” said Midland Health’s CFO, Stephen Bowerman. “We required a modern, effective and robust solution for our clinicians and patients, a system that would provide clinical visibility between the physician practice and acute care setting and, lastly, a revenue cycle that was integrated with the EHR.”
“In Cerner, we found a health IT system that could not only meet our needs today, but could provide population health management capabilities for the future, all with the confidence of a predictable total cost of ownership,” he continued.

The EHR will help providers access full patient records across all of Midland’s care sites, helping to improve hospital care as well as clinic follow-up care. This level of care coordination is also set to improve patient engagement, the health system said.
The EHR and revenue cycle management software will work in tandem to place billing and clinical information in one electronic record, enhancing clinical documentation and improving reimbursement.
The new billing software will also streamline patient payments, making the process easier for patients, Midland Health said.
The health IT suite will also come with a patient portal, allowing patients access to their medical records, online appointment scheduling, and secure direct messaging with providers.
“We are proud to offer the health IT solutions to advance Midland Health toward its vision of making Midland County one of the healthiest communities in Texas,” said Zane Burke, president of Cerner. “With an integrated record, Midland’s clinicians will have the resources to manage the health of its patient population.”
Cerner has made inroads with other health systems in recent months. Late last month, McLeod Health in South Carolina selected the vendor for its EHR across ninety ambulatory clinics and seven acute care hospitals. These facilities will transition to Cerner from the INVISION and Soarian products.
McLeod Health sought out Cerner’s products for similar reasons as Midland Health, citing the coordination between the EHR, population health management, and revenue cycle management systems as advantageous.
“We selected Cerner’s integrated platform of clinical, financial and population health management capabilities because we believe it’s one of the industry’s most robust health IT management offerings available,” said Jenean Blackmon, senior vice president and CIO of McLeod Health.
“With Cerner, we will provide our physicians with sophisticated tools to develop a more holistic view of each individual’s health history by incorporating financial and community information with the clinical record.”
The EHR vendor has been a notable technology across the healthcare industry, having been named the top EHR vendor by market share by Kalorama Information in June. The technology company topped industry rivals Epic Systems and McKesson likely due to its 2015 acquisition of Siemans Healthcare.
